Wildlife Education + Science

A pond is a magnet which attracts birds, insects and other wildlife. Some of these animals are merely casual visitors, but beneath the water’s surface there can be a resident community that is as diverse as the inhabitants of a rainforest. This video is an introduction to some of the most frequently encountered pond creatures.
If you’ve ever peered into the depths of a pond and glimpsed some of bustling life that goes on down there, you may be curious to know a little more about the identities of the key players and who is doing what to whom.
With the help of a little magnification, you can begin to appreciate the amazing body designs of insects and crustaceans, and with a lot of magnification you discover the microscopic gardens on the shell of a water flea!
An informative commentary by naturalist Dr. Richard Osmond, gives an insight into the many and varied life-styles of the pond population that is equally appropriate for schools (KS2 and above) and garden pond keepers.
If your pond does not have at least as many different animals as there are featured in this video, it may require a change of management.

This collection of munching moments recorded on-board the Hi-Tech Wild-Trek trailer will let you build up realistic food chains and food webs for freshwater habitats
From rushing brooks to gentle flows, the world of moving water carries its own mix of fascinating animal life, that is displayed and explained in this new DVD

A Hampshire chalk stream, with its gin-clear water, should be an easy place to spot the many insect larvae and nymphs that grow up in its cool depths, but there is very little to see from above. The aquatic life is hidden among weed and gravel, hanging on against the force of the current. Using a net is the only way to get a true picture of the variety of invertebrate life. Then a wealth of insect life, including the magnificent Demoiselles (pictured right) can be discovered. Not to mention the worms, crustaceans, snails, and small fish that form a complex ecological network that supports the larger fish and predatory birds.
In this DVD, you will find video clips captured on board the Hi-Tech Wild-Trek trailer during visits to a number of different rivers and streams in England - not just the chalk streams! A wide range of animal life is displayed, and described in an easy to access format.
This is a perfect primer for anglers and flyfishers or anyone who is curious about the aquatic environment. Particular attention is given to the categories in the Riverfly project.
One of the first copies of this DVD is being given away as a prize in the annual Salmon and Trout Association draw.
